DETAILS:AVOID THE 14 WINDS UP 17-DAY WINTER RUN, POSTS 183 DUI ARRESTS IN VENTURA COUNTYDriver Sober or Get Pulled Over
Arrests are down by 28 percent in Avoid the 14’s 17-day winter crackdown on drunk drivers compared with last year’s campaign. It ended at midnight on January 1st.
The arrest total stood at 183 DUI suspects, compared with 254 last year, said Avoid the 14 coordinator Sgt. Randy Latimer of the Oxnard Police Department. One DUI-related fatality was reported by CHP.
“This decrease in arrests is hopefully a sign that people are finally getting the message that driving after drinking is a bad idea. We know that the enforcement and education efforts are working as we have seen DUI-related fatalities decrease over the years,” Latimer said.
The crackdown included a court sting, a 17-officer DUI task force, a warrant sweep, three sobriety checkpoints, maximum freeway enforcement by the CHP along with in-city DUI patrols in most communities.
Avoid campaigns throughout the state will hit the roads again for Super Bowl Sunday. They are funded by the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
