DETAILS:
(OXNARD, Calif) – Detectives with the Oxnard Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit have arrested a second suspect in the 2012 murder of 19-year old Jose Gonzales of Oxnard. A 22-year old Hispanic male, who was with Gonzales at the time, was also shot but survived the shooting.
The shooting occurred on July 9, 2012 at approximately 8:52 P.M. in the 2500 block of Greenbrook Drive. Oxnard police officers responded to the scene after receiving several 9-1-1 calls of a shooting victim at that location. The police officers arrived and found Jose Gonzales suffering from a gunshot wound. Police officers found a second shooting, a 22-year old Hispanic male, a short distance away. The 22-year old was transported to the Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) and survived his injury. Unfortunately, Gonzales was declared deceased at the scene.
Detectives with the Major Crimes Unit and the Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) responded to the scene. The Major Crimes Unit led the investigation and worked very closely with the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office. The detectives worked tirelessly and persistently in order to obtain sufficient evidence to warrant the arrest of suspects in this case.
The first arrest in this case occurred on January 23, 2017. Major Crimes Detectives arrested 25-year old Hugo Sanchez, of Oxnard, for his involvement in the murder of Jose Gonzales.
On June 19, 2017, shortly before noon, agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and local law enforcement authorities in Menasha, Wisconsin, arrested 23-year old Gustavo Cuevas of Oxnard. Cuevas was taken into custody based on an arrest warrant Major Crimes Detectives obtained for his involvement in the murder of Jose Gonzales. Cuevas is in the process of being extradited back to Ventura County. Until he is returned, Cuevas will be held at detention facility in the state of Wisconsin.
The arrest of Cuevas is a result of the hard work and dedication of the Major Crimes Detectives, and in direct partnership with the Ventura County District Attorney’s Office.
Major Crimes Detectives will continue to investigate the senseless murder of Jose Gonzales and future arrests in this case are probable.
