(Oxnard, Calif) – The Oxnard Police Department has arrested a suspect in the murder of 22-year old Jose Luis Lopez, a resident of the City of Port Hueneme.
On April 22, 2018, at approximately 8:00 p.m., Oxnard police officers responded to a shooting victim in the 2900 block of Ocean Drive. When the police officers arrived at the scene, they located 22-year old Jose Lopez suffering from gunshot wounds. Emergency Medical Services arrived on scene and attempted to render aid. Unfortunately, Lopez was pronounced deceased at the scene.
The Oxnard Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit responded to the scene to lead the investigation. Since the murder of Jose Lopez, Major Crimes Detective diligently and thoroughly investigated the case. During the investigation, detectives determined that Lopez’ murder was gang-motivated.
On May 9, 2018, in the early morning hours, police officers and detectives from the Oxnard Police Department and the Ventura Police Department served several search warrants in the City of Oxnard. The search warrant operation was directly related to the homicide investigation. Detectives seized additional evidence and gathered more information during the search warrant operation.
Based on the information and evidence gathered during the investigation thus far, Major Crimes Detectives were able to identify 20-year old Jorge Francisco Ortega, an Oxnard resident, as a suspect in the case. On May 11, 2018, at approximately 3:50 p.m., Major Crimes Detectives arrested Ortega and charged him with murder. At the time of his arrest, Ortega was in custody at Ventura County Jail on charges unrelated to the homicide investigation. Ortega will remain in custody with no bail.
Major Crimes Detectives will continue to investigate the murder of Jose Lopez. Detectives anticipate additional arrests as the investigation moves forward.
The City of Oxnard offers a $10,000.00 reward to anyone who provides information that leads to the arrest and conviction of suspect(s) in homicide cases. Anyone that has information on the murder of Jose Lopez is asked to contact Detective Jaime Miranda at (805) 385-7680.
