On March 30, 2017, at 10:00 a.m., Property Crimes Detective from the Oxnard Police Department conducted a free and voluntary educational community survey at the CenterPoint Mall, located in the 2700 block of Saviers Road. The Property Crimes Detectives, who regularly handle investigations of thefts from vehicles, walked the parking lot looking for vehicles that had valuables in plain sight. The purpose of the survey was to educate shoppers and to prevent them from becoming victims of theft.
Detectives found that many vehicles had purses, cell phones, keys, and other valuable items on the front seats/floorboards (*See Attached Photos*). A number of the vehicles were found to be unlocked. The detectives left approximately 150 educational flyers onunattended vehicles that they encountered with valuables that were in plain sight. The flyers informed the owners of the vulnerability to vehicles and valuables. Many concerned residents, who thought they were receiving a citation, were surprised and relieved to learn how easily they could have had their valuables stolen. Several residents wanted more information on how they could protect themselves and their property.
The Oxnard Police Department would like to remind residents to remove their valuables from plain view and ensure they lock their vehicles. The Oxnard Police Department has been following an Intelligence Led Policing Model and is working to educate our residents to prevent them from becoming victims of crime. The Oxnard Police Department is planning similar events in the future.
