The Oxnard Police Department Traffic Unit conducted a sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint on Saturday, January 22, 2011, from 6:00 P.M. to midnight.

The checkpoint was conducted in the westbound lanes of Pleasant Valley Road @ Jefferson Square.

Officers screened 926 motorists who passed through the checkpoint and conducted seven DUI investigations with drivers who had been drinking alcohol. These investigations led to the arrest of four drivers for DUI. One additional DUI arrest was made by an officer who was on the way to work at the checkpoint.

At the checkpoint, citations were issued to 59 drivers for various drivers’ license violations. Forty-three drivers were issued citations for driving without a valid driver’s license and five drivers were cited for driving with a suspended driver’s license. One additional driver was arrested for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. Twenty-six vehicles were towed from the checkpoint.

Following the checkpoint, traffic officers patrolled the City of Oxnard searching for impaired drivers until 2:00 A.M. This enforcement resulted in the arrest of two additional drivers for DUI. One of the drivers was 18 years old and found to have a blood alcohol level of .20, over double the legal limit of .08.

The other driver was involved in a crash with a parked vehicle. The force of the collision caused the suspect vehicle to drive over the sidewalk and collide into the block wall that surrounds a residence. The vehicle was traveling so fast that the block wall wasn’t able to stop it before it also collided into the side of the home and caused minor damage. Following the crash, the driver fled the scene on foot but was located by responding officers a short distance away. The driver sustained significant facial injuries and was transported to the hospital. He was later booked into the Ventura County Jail on suspicion of DUI.

The Oxnard Police Department will continue to conduct DUI enforcement operations this year. These DUI operations are an effort to reduce the number of alcohol related crashes and to make our roadways and community safer. We also remind people that if they see an impaired driver to dial 911. These DUI enforcement operations are funded by grants from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) through the National Highway Transportation Administration.

On January 27, at about 10:00 AM, Oxnard Police Officers were called to the 2100 block of Avila Pl reference a trespass. Officers learned that previous occupants had been evicted from the residence by Ventura County Sheriff’s officials on January 19th. The owner of the residence told officers that an attorney representing the former occupants was trespassing. The attorney told officers that he had filed additional paperwork with the Ventura County Court and that he was there to take possession of the home.

Officers forwarded paperwork from each of the involved parties to the Oxnard City Attorney’s office. The city attorney reviewed the documentation from each party and determined that the party who had been evicted no longer had a right to the residence.

At about 2:30 PM the attorney for the former resident returned to the property. The owner of the property placed the attorney under arrest for trespass. The attorney was cited and released at the scene.

On 1/3/2011 at 0140 hrs officers responded to the 300 block of Lafayette Drive for a family dispute. During the investigation Officers learned that the Suspect, Dominic Pinkard, assaulted a relative, Steven Proefroc. The victim’s father-in-law heard the incident and called 9-1-1.

When officers arrived they observed the victim inside the residence with significant head and facial injuries. Pinkard fled the scene prior to the officer’s arrival. Proefroc was immediately taken to the Ventura County Medical Center where he is currently undergoing emergency brain surgery.

Investigators are still investigating the case and unsure of the motive for the assault. Investigators are looking for Dominic Pinkard to interview him about this incident. The Oxnard Police Department will be conducting a multi-location sobriety and driver’s license checkpoint on Saturday, January 22nd, 2011, from 6:00 P.M. to 2:00 A.M. The checkpoint will be held throughout the City of Oxnard and is funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Oxnard Police Department arrested 956 drivers for DUI in 2010 and investigated over 215 alcohol related collisions. So far this year, officers have made 41 DUI arrests in the City of Oxnard. The Oxnard Police Department’s continued efforts in DUI enforcement have resulted in significant reductions in the number of alcohol related collisions and fatal collisions involving alcohol.

Please buckle up, drive sober, and drive safely in 2011.

The Oxnard Police Department Traffic Unit conducted three sobriety and driver’s license checkpoints on Friday, December 31st, 2010, from 6:00 P.M. to midnight.

The first checkpoint was conducted in the northbound lanes of Oxnard Boulevard @ Second Street. The second one was in the southbound lanes of Saviers Road @ Laurel Street. The last checkpoint was in the southbound lanes of Ventura Road @ Devonshire Drive.

Officers screened 776 motorists who passed through the checkpoints. Officers also conducted three DUI investigations, however, no DUI arrests were made.

Citations were issued to 19 drivers for various drivers’ license violations. Eleven drivers were issued citations for driving without a valid driver’s license and three drivers were cited for driving with a suspended driver’s license. One individual was arrested for an outstanding misdemeanor warrant. Four vehicles were towed from the checkpoints.

Following the checkpoints, traffic officers patrolled the City of Oxnard searching for impaired drivers. This enforcement resulted in the arrest of 10 DUI drivers within three hours.

On 01-05-2011 at 5:41 A.M. Officers received a call of a vehicle struck by a train at the Wagon Wheel railroad crossing. Upon officer’s arrival to the location, it was discovered that Oxnard resident Marcos Sotelo age 19, attempted to drive his 1991 Jeep Cherokee across the railroad tracks and became stuck on the tracks. Sotelo was able to escape the vehicle, just prior to his vehicle being struck by a southbound Metro-Link train, traveling at an estimated speed of 50 MPH. Sotelo’s vehicle was pushed for a distance of 150 Yards. Sotelo and the nine Metro-Link passengers were uninjured in the crash. The Metro-Link was delayed for approximately two hours. Sotelo was arrested for trespassing on railroad property and transported to the Oxnard Police department for questioning.

The public is reminded that, trespassing on railroad property is a misdemeanor and is punishable by Jail or Fine. Railroad property is defined as; land owned, leased, or possessed by a railroad upon which is placed a railroad track and the land immediately adjacent thereto, to the distance of 20 feet on either side of the track.

On 1/6/11 at approximately 2139 hours, an Oxnard Police Officer was flagged down by a subject who had suffered three stab wounds, in the area of Channel Islands Blvd. and “M” Street. The stabbing victim directed officers to the area that he was stabbed, which was in the 1200 block of West Kamala Street. While officers were checking the area they located an addition stabbing victim inside a residence in the same area.

According to witnesses, the victims were riding their skateboards in the 1200 block of West Kamala when they were approached by two subjects. One subject grabbed the victim and the other subject stabbed the victim three times. The victim pulled out a knife in self defense and stabbed the suspect multiple times. One suspect was identified as Jonathan Zambrano (1/24/90). Zambrano was arrested and booked into the Ventura County Jail for assault with a deadly weapon.

Both victims were transported to Ventura County Medical Center where they are listed in stable condition.

On 01/29/11 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., the Oxnard Police Department, in partnership with Ventura County Public Health/VCMC and Performance Bicycle, will be hosting a “Bicycle Safety Day”.

Bicycle registration will be available to the public free of cost. A raffle will be held and prizes such as water bottles, pads, helmets and bicycles will be given away. Engraving will be available for application of personal identification numbers. Bicycle safety information will be provided by Ventura County Public Health/VCMC and bike inspections will be completed by Performance Bicycle.

This event is being conducted in response to excessive bicycle thefts and bicycle vs. vehicle collisions. From November 2009, 85 bicycles have been reported stolen (7 per month) totaling $30,793.00. Since 2005, there has been an average of 76 collisions involving bicyclists per year.

On 1/1/11 at approximately 0210 hours, Oxnard Police Officers were dispatched to the 1900 block of Pericles regarding a fight in progress. When officers arrived they located a male subject who had suffered several stab wounds to his abdomen. The victim was transported to Ventura County Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries and is currently listed in “Stable” condition.

It was learned that there was a party in the 1900 block of Pericles that was attended by several gang members. Witnesses told investigators that a fight started in the middle of the street and during the fight, people took out bats and knives. It was also learned that during the fight, at least one person was yelling gang slogans.
